missing chainstay bridge
 

does anyone have any idea how necessary a chainstay bridge is? once the bridge is compromised does the structural integrity of the frame decrees? are there any dangers? thanks

depends on the frame.... why? did yours break?

If the Frame Builder put it there it wasn't just for looks.;)

My understanding is that it doesn't do much in terms of adding stiffness.

seems like tubing manufacturers don't really like the chainstay bridge. You need it for a decent fender install though.

no it didnt break it was removed. actually there was never a bridge it was just a kickstand plate welded between the chainstay where the bridge would be. but its a 60cm steel bianchi road frame. i just want to know if chainstay bridges really serve a direly necessary purpose

The chainstay bridge is entirely optional. Some people claim it stiffens the chainstays. I've built frames both ways and can't tell the difference. They are handy if you need a place to anchor a fender, though.
