    Chain Issues

    Hi,

    I have been having problems with my chain. It only has a 1000 miles on it and its a kmc.
    The problem is after a couple of rides it starts to squeak again. Maybe 60 or 80 miles. I am using Finish Line Dry Lube. So if there are any suggestions I would be grateful.

    Do you clean your chain before putting lube on?

    First off, I'd make sure the clean is super clean. Which leads me to ask, how are you cleaning your chain?

    Once the chain is cleaned, I would drip the lube on the pins while backpedaling the lube on each pin and let it penetrate overnight or an hour or so. Then take a paper towel and back pedal to remove any excess. I have no squeaks doing it this way.

    Try different lube?

    The wax stuff does not, IMO, work very well, though this is a subjective opinion. T-9 seems to do the job pretty well, though I'd suggest going with whatever's on clearance.

    Sorry for the commercial conflict of interest, but consider a heavier duty wet lube. If you want to read a few reviews on my stuff google "chain-L reviews" or visit the my site below the signature.

    Note: Chain-L isn't the only choice, but one of many that should give you longer service life. Read Sheldon Brown's suggestions on chain care. In any case be sure chain is clean and dry inside and out before applying any lube so as to get the best possible performance.

    Don't worry about cleaning it. Dirt doesn't make it squeak. I like wax lube (White Lightning) but not by itself. I use a shot of wet lube ever once in a while. Try a shot of something like Tri-Flow and see if that doesn't keep the squeaks away a lot longer.


    P.S. FBinNY is right. If you clean it and leave the innards wet, they will prevent lube from getting into the rollers, then evaporate and leave them un-lubed. Then with the dry lube set up, you will have a hard time getting any lube into the innards. If the shot of wet lube doesn't work very well, you may have to strip the dry lube off before you can fix it.

    While you're down there, measure your chain. Running dry will wear it in a hurry.

    But bear in mind that lubrication, no matter what kind of whizz bang miracle stuff you use (especially because the chain works hard and is totally exposed in a very dirty environment and is rather important to your cycling enjoyment), is a regular maintenance item. It is NOT a 'do it once and forget it' kind of deal though you can certainly be led into that virtual reality by some.

    Whether leaving the inside wet is a problem depends on what you leave it wet with. Hopefully not simple green or some citrus cleaner. I wouldn't want either one mixed with my lube.

    Dry lubes require very frequent application, perhaps after every ride, and generally produce poor chain life.

    I can leave my chain wet with mineral spirits or water and not have a problem as long as I apply my homebrew lube generously to displace the water, right after cleaning. I've never done anything more than wipe the exterior prior to lubing.

    Try an oil based "wet" lube. I like Purple Extreme but I usually use "home brew" 4 parts mineral spirits to 1 part Mobil One synthetic motor oil.
