Road bike wheel becomes loose
I have a set of Felt hubs on my 2 X 10 speed road bike. I've had them since they were new, they now have ~2500 miles on them. At 1000 miles, the rear wheel became loose, I could wiggle the rim while handling the bike. I took the bike in to the lbs and they adjusted it.
Now again at 2500 miles the hub is loose again. I was able tightened the quick release a full 2 turns, this tightened up the hub. I recently had the wheel trued about 500 miles ago. When I reinstalled the wheel, the quick release was tight & secure. Why is the hub coming loose? I ride long distance events, a failure could leave me stranded. Michael |
Sounds like the cone nuts were not tightened properly.

That's what I thought, however I have a couple follow-up questions.
I have not taken the hub apart, this could be a cartridge bearing with a Shimano 10 speed freehub. Does the skewer determine the tension on this system? Michael |
no the skewer doesn't determine the tension on the system but it does add to it. like wmodavis said the locking nut need to be lock to the cones (both side).first adjust the cone so there little play in the axle, don't worry about it because it will be remove when you close the skewer, then lock the locking nuts in place.

As an example:
http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=105 and... http://bicycletutor.com/overhaul-wheel-bearings/ I'd suggest you get some cone-wrenches and a set of box-wrenches - metric. These will come in handy for all sorts of things about the house. |
Thank's everyone.
