    Using oversized Front Derailleur

    Hi everyone!

I am upgrading my bike and bought a used Ultegra front derailleur, not considering the size issue. Turns out the derailleur is for 31.8 mm tubing (1 1/4") while mine is 28.6 mm (1 1/8"). I saw an ebay add mentioning shims that can be used to adapt the 31.8 mm derailleur for the smaller frame tubing. Here's the link:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SHIMANO-ULTE...3A1%7C294%3A50

    Ebay item number : 380128833518

Is this actually a viable option? It'd save me a heap if it was, but I don't want to Mickey Mouse this either! Thanks in advance for any input!

The new Shimano derailleurs only come that way... 31.8 with a shim for 28.6, so it is either viable, or bikes that need a 28.6 clamp don't use a Shimano front derailleur.

A new Shimano I bought came with shims/clamps for all three sizes - 28.6mm up to 34.5mm. So you might ask your LBS if they have one kicking about. I'll bet they have a crate full.
How do you keep an idiot in suspense?

It includes the shim. Shims are fine. You're good to go !
