Weird round chainstay cable stop, special ferrule needed?

Weird round chainstay cable stop, special ferrule needed?
Hi,
I recently got a nice old bike given to me. I decided to upgrade it a bit. I had a spare 9-speed Tiagra brifter, so I decided to install a 9-speed drivetrain. It's shifting great on the workstand, and it's shifting great most of the time, but sometimes it seems to hang between gears.
I suspect that the ferrule I'm using for the chainstay cable stop for the rear deraileur cable is the problem - or at least, part of the problem. The cable stop is weird, I don't remember seeing that kind before - instead of being the usual tube that receives the cable housing, it's a brazed-on metal sphere with a hole going through it.
Now, when I got the bike, there were two ferrules on the rear derailleur cable housing. A normal ferrule which was inserted into another kind of ferrule - and the outer ferrule is not in good shape. The photo doesn't do it glory...
Anyway, that outer ferrule has seen better days, and it doesn't seem to be fitting very well in the spherical cable stop.
So, I was wondering, does this two-ferrule arrangement seem like a good thing to do? Should I go looking for a replacement outer ferrule, or is there a better way to mate the rear derailleur cable housing to the weird cable stop?

yes, go to any bike shop, there should be a ton of those left over since cable sets still come with that piece and the newer bikes don't use it.

Does anybody know an online source for those (or a QBP part # for that matter)? I tend to buy my ferrules, crimps, etc by the bottle. The cables I get (bulk) don't come with them, and I tend to go through them faster than I end up with new cable housing sets.

reducing ferrule: Edit, or "step down", as bikeman says

Ah, a trip to the LBS later and I have what I needed! $3 for the step-down ferrule and a pre-cut length of 4mm cable housing (I had 5mm housing that wasn't compatible with the ferrule).
The new ferrule fits perfectly and holds the cable housing the way it should... Hopefully this will fix my minor shifting issues!
