Replacing front tire.
I recently bought my first road bike. It is a used 1989 Trek 330 best as I can tell and The wheels are pretty crappy/seem cheap. I dont feel like figuring out which wheel I can use on the back/ transferring the cassete or whatever I would need to do. Can I just buy a front wheel for it and not replace back? would I see much boost in performance? any reccomendations?

Interesting question. If you think about the physics of air flow the front wheel is out there in the leading stream of smooth air. By the time the air goes past the back wheel it has been twisted and bent every which way by the frame, your body, the pedals, and everything else. So it would stand to reason that a slick wheel would get you more bang for the buck on the front than anywhere else.
I have an SRAM S60 wheel on the front and a standard CXP-22 on the back of one bike. I think it makes a big difference in the performance of the bike, but... I never tried it with the same wheel on the back.
From a "bling" stand point it is tough to beat the S60 with black spokes on a black bike. I will have to post a picture later.

hhmm
As far as front wheels go... is there anything I have to watch for as far as compatability? It seems to me that any 700c front wheel would be fine since nothing really attaches to it? Am I free to buy any road bike wheel or is there anything I hav eto watch out for? Thanks.

Generally speaking as long as it is designated 700c road (vs the wider 29"/700c MTB rims), it should be a straight-forward swap.

Holy crap wheels are expensive. I think Ill hold off. Seeing as how a single wheel is more than the 100$ I payed for my bike.
