Hi kris,

Do you mean the same number of teeth on the derailleur pulleys?... or are you talking about a rear gear cluster?

No. But most of the better RD's have 11-tooth jockey-wheels/tension-rollers.

The number of teeth on the two smaller gears on the derailleur, or the large cluster of gears on the wheel of your bike?

OK, these are usually called "jockey pulleys". As Panther said, you don't have to have the same number of teeth, but newer, better derailleurs have 11 teeth instead of 10.

No, your current chain will be fine (unless of course it simply needs replacement anyways due to wear).

After removing your current RD, it's a good idea to check (or have someone check) the derailleur hanger (mounting point) alignment.
