Real old chainring help

Hey everyone, new here, so bare with me!

I found this old bike in a basement at school, and I have no need for the 12 speeds. So I'm in the process of turning it into a single speed.

The bike came with 1 piece cranks, in stead of two independent arms, so the chain ring isn't physically connected to the cranks, they are just held next to each other on a pin and a nut.

The only problem is when I went to separate the two chainrings I noticed they aren't connected with bolts, they are riveted together. I'm pretty sure there is no way to disconnect them, but I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks! Here are some pictures that show what I'm talking about kind of sort of...

You can cut out the rivets if you like the smaller ring's ratio, but an easier solution is to go to niagaracycle.com or bikepartsusa.com and buy a chainring for a one-piece/ashtabula/bmx crank.

You would ruin the main ring with a hacksaw because you can't get at it from the front, but a bench grinder would let you work from the front (so you'd mess up the chain guard instead of the sprocket if you missed) and would make short work of the rivet head.

Of course, some people convert by just putting the chain on their favorite chainring and sprocket and leaving the gears in place.

ahh, cool thanks.

Not sure if I have a grinder, and I like the real minimal look with just one ring...luckily you sent me those links too, everywhere I was looking everything was more than I really wanted to spend.

Thanks a lot for the help!
