cassette & chain compatible?

I'm getting a Shimano SLX Cassette, 9 Speed 11-32, (HG61) and wondering if a Shimano Ultegra/XT 9 Speed Chain, CN HG93 will work with it? It's what I have on the bike now, so I thought I should get the same one as a replacement.

What do the numbers next to the HG stand for? Some shimano HG chains are 73 while others are 93?

Any info would be appreciated!

A 9 speed chain will work with the 9 speed cassette, regardless of product line (LX, XT or XTR).

An HG93 chain is higher quality than an HG73 chain, which in turn is higher quality than HG53. The practical difference is that the color is different.

On the other hand, an HG91 chain is a 6/7/8 speed chain.

HG = HyperGlide, it has to do with the shape of the teeth and the chain side plates.
There was also an IG, (InterGlide), such as I have on my 8s mtn bike. I don't know if there was ever a 9s version.

In general, if both parts have "HG" in the number, and are the same speed, they will work.
