Time to replace 8sp grip shifters

So my wife took a spill today and broke her left 8sp grip shifter and got four stitches in her chin.....

Her bike a mid 90's Stumpjumper, has Deore XT derailleurs, separate brake levers and V brakes. I just put a new cassette on it but should I consider upgrading her to 9 speed? Or, can I shift an 8sp using a 9sp shifter.

Looking for suggestions for some good 8sp trigger shifters or brake / shifter combos. Maybe these:

Thanks!

Hope you wife recovers quickly!

Personally, I've found that there is a big improvement in going from 7-speed to 8-speed because you can run a full-range 11t-32t cassette without big gear-to-gear jumps. Going from 8 to 9 speeds doesn't make a big perceived difference, and 9-speed stuff is just more finicky because of the narrower tolerances.

Remember, too, that both 8- and 9-speed left shifters are the same, since they are just shifting the same front derailleur.

I like my SRAM Attack 8-speed gripshifter set.

You can't go wrong with those Alivio ST-MC410 brake/shift levers or the Alivio SL-M410 shifter pods. Of course, they're not as sexy or expensive as the SL-M748 XT shifter pods but either will work just great!

So can I use a 9sp shifter with and 8sp cassette? Or do I need an 8sp for the 8sp?

The SL M748's are out of stock. Maybe they'll be back soon...

Thanks for the help.

The *left* shifters should be the same as both are 1-to-3; it's the *right* shifters that have the 8sp vs 9sp difference.

You can use 8 of the 9 cogs with an 8 sp shifter if you use the alternate cable routing described by Sheldon Brown, but not an 8 sp cassette with a 9 sp shifter.
