considering the repair cost, I'm starting to think that it might be wiser to unload the bike on CL and pick up a new one from bikes direct. thoughts?

Yep, it's a triple crank. If you have a square taper bottom bracket, the replacement shouldn't cost much. Buy a crank puller for about $20 or have the shop do it... it should take about 10 minutes.

Triple? It has the areas to allow for three rings to be bolted on.

Under BCD in the description, it says 110, 74. The 110 is for the outer and middle rings, 74 is for the granny.

If you're asking about the triple: It has 2 bolt circle diameters (110 and 74)

If you're asking about the square taper bottom bracket, the spindle that the cranks slide onto is a square.
