Shimano Cable Kit Contents

Well, I feel quite ignorant for asking, but . . .

I used a Shimano Dura Ace Cable kit to replace my shifting cable. The kit came with 2 cables, 2 long housings, 1 short housing, five black plastic ferrules, 2 cable end crimps, and 1 silver ferrule like thing.

It is the one silver ferrule like thing that has me somewhat baffled -- what is it, and what is it for? It is shaped like a ferrule, but it appears to sorta step down on one end, so it sorta has a female and male end to it.

I can't seem to find anything like it on any of my existing cable . . . .

sorry, I don't have a pic available.

Some bikes require the step-down ferrule on the short piece of cable by the rear derailleur. It depends on the size of the brazed-on fitting there.

Demon,

Thanks -- I had hoped that was the case, but I thought I would ask. Now I know.
