Repairing older Shimano Brifter
I'm working on an old Trek MTB that belongs to a co-worker. She complained "it wouldn't shift". This has the old all-in-one brifters that were common some years back, the kind with the indicator wheel on top.
Thing would catch one or two gears, then quit. I was just going to replace it with an 8-speed model I had on hand, but with nothing to loose...
The problem was that the little spring-loaded "pawl" that catches the notches was not moving. I shot it down with WD-40 and got it moving, but stiffly. More is better....I shot it down a couple more times while working it back and forth with a screwdriver, and sure enough it freed up.
Added some graphite-based lube and it works like new....
