Wobbly, rattling front hub

Felt it yesterday morning before taking off for work. It seemed to have gotten worse by the time I got into the building. I met a fellow bike commuter on the elevator on the way upstairs and he took a look at it and was also convinced that my hub was loose and in need of some tightening. He cautioned me to stop riding it until it was fixed.

I had my wife come get me and the bike at around 11 or so and we went straight to the LBS to have my hub looked at. The mechanic took a look at it, wobbled the front wheel and proceed to tighten my loose quick release.

Ahhh ... lessons in humility.

Did you attempt to fix the problem yourself before you took your bike to the LBS?

I didn't even think to check my quick release. I'd had the wheel off a couple of weeks ago for routine cleaning but hadn't messed with it since then. I was incredibly embarrassed when the mechanic tightened my quick release right in front of me.

Adjusting hubs with QR's is really nice. I intentionally leave mine just a touch lose because it makes sure I'm not crushing the bearings, and I can adjust the tightness with the QR.

It was a learning experience.
You only need to be embarrassed if it happens a second time.
