6 speed shimano chain compatible with 5 speed shimano chain

I have an old mtb with a shimano five cog freewheel on the back and an indexed 5 spd shimano shifter. Chain needs replacing. was wondering should a shimano chain of the 6 speed variety work on this five spd indexed setup?

Retro Grouch is correct. You want a 3/32 chain.

    +1

And I think you'll find the 6/7/8 speed chain shifts a little better than the old fiver you have on there.
