Manitou Fork "Air Piston Head" -what is it?

What is the function of this part (Mantiou "Air Piston Head") Is this something that is commonly replaced? Does it function as a seal, bumper, bushing...? I am replacing my seals, and since I'll have the fork apart, should I just replace this too?

Looks like a bore seal. I'd say if it's intact, leave well enough alone. But then, I have no actual experience with one.
