Paint chips in a potential frame

I found a frame that would be perfect to build up for my wife. I think I can get the frame for a decent price. It's an aluminum frame and all the pictures show that it's in great shape, except this one area.

It says that that the frame is not cracked anywhere or dented, just surface paint chips.

Here is one of the pictures. What do you guys think based on this image. I know seeing the frame in person would be ideal, but I just would like a couple other, most likely better, sets of eyes taking a look at the image. If it's just surface paint chips, I have no problem, but I'm worried about what I see in the picture being a compromised aluminum frame. Again, the rest of the frame seems very nice based on the pictures.

Thanks.

It looks like the chain dropped, and it got wedged between the chainring bolts and the chainstays as the operator continued to pedal - crunch! It may be compromised, but may not be so bad. It's a tough call- alu frames often break at the chainstay, usually nearer the bottom bracket. Me, I'd walk away, but I'm not really fond of alu frames.

Cool. Thanks for the input. I wasn't sure what could of caused that or if it was messed up or not. I think I'll just pass.

Most likely, a loose chainring bolt caused the marks, probably bending the inner chainring, and the chain fell off (or some combination of those events, like Squeazel said).

I would stay away, and certainly would not build it up for my wife . . . I like the way she looks.

I ended up passing up on the frame. We're in no hurry to find a new frame for her. She's happy with her road geared hybrid. I'm going to build her new wheels this fall and she'll be very happy. The wheels on her bike are pretty cheap. The plan over the next couple years is to get her back on a true road bike once we get many more miles in and she feels more comfortable. She comes from a mountain bike background and didn't want drop bars quite yet. As long as she's happy and on a bike, that's all that matters.

Thanks for the heads up about the frame. This place always comes through when I need a little advice. I'm still very much new to all this.

Thank you.

Mike
