Avid Juicy ultimate help

The pads are way too close together and I can barely even get the rotor between the them. I've been a roadie all my life so I've dealt with hydraulic disc brakes before. It's not a question of alignment as I know how to do that with the CPS bolts, but how the hell are these pads loosened and tightened like pads on a road bike are brought closer to the rim?

Did you pull the lever while the caliper was off the rotor? You can try pulling the pads and using a wrench to push the pistons back. I think 8mm box end, but it's been a while.
