Stem cap question
My bike has a 1-inch threadless fork, a 1-1/8 stem, and a spacer to correct that.
The current stem cap is plastic, and doesn't let me get the bearings adjusted correctly before the stem cap bolt starts digging through the cap. So I need to replace this with a metal cap.
Here is my question: do I use a 1-inch metal cap to match the fork or a 1-1/8 inch metal cap to match the stem?

The stem cap needs to press down on the stem, not the steerer.
The stem, or spacers above it should be 2 or 3 mm higher than the steerer.
That way tightening the stem cap bolt will adjust the bearings with the stem slackened off.
Once the headset bearings are right and the stem tightened, the stem cap is redundant until next time you adjust the headset bearings.
So I reckon you need a 1-1/8 stem cap.
