Is the DA 7900 Crankset compatible with 7800 components?

My LBS is telling me that there are no issues with just the crank set but i've read on other forums that you have to have a 7900 chain which is not compatible with the 7800 Rear d. I can't seem to get a straight answer -

as long as it's the same size and its teeth match up it should work. 130 bcd and 53 teeth 9 or 10 speed should interchange. as far as i can tell the only thing different from the 7800 and 7900 chains is the weight and the directional of the 7900. oh, and the crappy quick link.
