Suntour Accushift 6 speed freewheel replacement

I have a 1987 Raleigh Scott Tinley Technium Tri-Lite with Suntour drivetrain (Cyclone 7000 RD, DT shifters with accushift, 13-23 FW, and 53/42 CR). I can't make much use of the 53 anymore and would like to gear down to something more reasonalbe for brevet riding.
I have located some NOS ST freewheels, 13-30 6sp "Winner Ultra" and a 14-30 Pro Comp Ultra.

My question is would either of these freewheels work and still allow index shifting ?

Other options ? Chainrings, etc.

Appreciate your expertise

Hello. some one may correct me but I will say no. generally if a suntour FW takes 2 prong tool it is not indexing, 4 prong is ok. I am not sure what the capacity of the cyclone is but I do not think it will handle a 53/30 you need a long cage for that. where do you live? you might consider (althought the cost may be an issue) going compact. stick with a 13-23 or 14-20 something and go compact up front 38/48 or 50 how old is your chain? about how many miles? if you have alot of miles on it replace it with your freewheel. don't be suprised if your chainrings are worn too.

The Ultras are narrow-spaced 6-speed meant to fit in place of a 5-speed FW (120mm rear OLD). Your shifters may index with one if they have a 7-speed setting (my GPX Accushift has 6, 7, and friction settings).

The difference btw Suntour 6-speed and Shimano 6-speed spacing is pretty small. I've used 6-speed Suntour FWs in my Shimano 6 indexed drivetrain and vice-versa. The jockey pulley of the rear derailer has a little play in it to allow the chain to line up with the cog. Thus a Shimano compatible 6-speed FW will likely work fine.

I actually have a lightly used old Suntour Alpha 6-speed 13-28 (4-prong and "indexed') sitting in my basement. I'll prolly never use it again (I run 7sp with the GPX). I could send it to you if you want it.

Another option is to get a few loose cogs and turn your current 13-23 into a 13-28 or 13-30. I've done this with my Shimano FW (which is why I don't use the Alpha anymore) but don't know about availability of Suntour loose cogs. You may be able to find cogs at www.loosescrews.com (that's where I found Shimano loose cogs).

Thanks for BG and GB your posts

I have decided the best route would be to replace the crankset. Velo Orange has a nice looking Suguino 48/34 as does Yellow Jersey. I live in central Mississippi and the hills are not that formidable - except when it gets past 90 with 100% humidity at mile 60 - that's when I need some help ! I think a triple would probably be overkill for local rides and my other rig serves me well with an Ultegra 50/34.

I can't confirm it absolutely but I believe it's correct. Certainly the 2-prong freewheels predated indexing. Whether all 4-prong freewheels are index-compatible, I'm not certain.

I also know the Sun Tour 6-speed "Ultra" freewheels were spaced very much like later 7-speed freewheels and require the same narrow chain.
