27" Wheel Conversion
Hello all, I am currently in the process of take apart an old ten speed frame, re-painting it fluorescent green, and making it into a fixed gear.
My question is, I do not want to spend a lot of money on this bike, as I will be using it mainly for tricks, so I don't care if it breaks. I have extra 27" wheels that I want to turn into fixed gear wheels. My thought was to find a lower end track hub, that has 36 holes, and then put it on the 27" wheel. Is this possible, and will the tire fit on my frame once it is done?
Any help is greatly appreciated, and if there is thread that already asked this please direct me to it. Thanks everyone.

Flourescent green? Sounds interesting! Although taking your wheel apart and rebuilding it with your track hub will take considerable skill and effort on your part, or else some $$$ for someone else to do it.
Doing tricks on a 10-speed frame, eh? Sounds like some of the stuff on "Quicksilver". Hey, to each his own.

You might search Sheldon Brown's website for converting over. He explains that converting a freewheel to fixed can be done and how.....pretty cheaply.

hard to tell, as you aren't saying which size wheels the bike originally came with.
Assuming 700C to 27"
Race frame with tight clearance = bad news
Utility frame with room for fenders = good news
Not wanting skinny tires = bad news
My suggestion is to borrow a wheel with a known dimension, chuck it in there and see what you get. You get a better baseline for your assumptions from there.

its going to be hard to lace a new hub into those rims, you will have to calculate spoke length and cut your old spokes down or buy a new spoke set. youll have to build the wheel or pay a shop to do it.

you'l have to look into your chainline as well: your chainring has to line up pretty much perfectly with the cog in the rear. chainline is quite important with a fixed gear rig.

It can certainly be done if you don't mind investing a little time and effort. I have built several wheels with the help of Sheldon's article on the subject. They aren't dead on, but you can't feel less than a few mm of radial runout when riding anyway. The big thing is getting it even side to side so the brakes don't act flooky, and the bike will balance properly.
Fixed gear is nice, but it can get a little tiring, like riding a tricycle; when you are moving so are your legs. A 3 speed isn't a bad choice either. You have the benefit of a stronger chain, less maintenance than is required by a derailleur, and the advantage of a couple more gears when needed, plus less fatigue. Just a thought. The only drawback is a couple of extra pounds in the rear wheel.

Thanks for all of the advice, I am currently looking for some tools or finish taking apart the bike I am about to paint. The frame I chose to use has a weird head set that I need a Hook spanner to take off, so I am trying to fine someone who can take it off for free.
Also I still might re lace a wheel with a track hub, as this whole process is a learning experience for me. I have also thought about finding a used BMX bike with a 40t crank ring, and put it on my fixed gear, not sure about it, but I'm going to try it out. Once I get closer to re-building I'll let you guys know how it goes.
