derailleur hanger question for old novara

I was hoping someone could help me out with a little a problem. I am not very bike mechanic savy so I might just have the thing turned the wrong way but my derailleur hanger doesn't seem to fit on my frame correctly. The bike is a friends old novara from the 80s I think, horizontal dropouts, and no derailleur thingy to hook up to like most frames I am used to. The derailleur was attached before I took it off a few weeks ago (should have paid more attention at the time), but it is likely that it was not very secure as the bike hasn't been in riding condition for some time. Looking at the dropout area, If I turn the hanger in the direction it should go there is a tab with a hole (for fenders I think) that gets in the way because it is raised a 1/4 inch or so above the plane of the dropout surface. Should I get a different hanger? Here are two pics, the first is the derailleur itself (Suntour AR, I think) with the derailleur hanger attached, the second is the frame/ dropout. Thanks for any help in advance, Will

If it was my bike I think that I'd put a little grinder bit in my Dremel and carefully carve away the "claw" until it fit the dropout flush.

Is there a small bolt in the derailleur hanger? That sits in the dropout slot to hold the hanger in place when the wheel is out. It also moves the whole hanger forward so that it should clear the fender mount.

yes you need the little bolt and backing plate/nut like on this link. it is likely they were missing before you started the project. you should be able to get them at the local shop. mount the derailer in the slot first and tighten, then the wheel, chain, and the cable. adjust the derailuer. now it is manicure time LOL

Thanks for the help, all of you who replied to my question. I do have the bolt and plate and I put it in and it seems to work/ derailleur is now in its correct position. My only concern and probably the reason why I didn't consider this option is that the left side of my axel is now resting with a gap between it and the actual back of the dropout slot. Anyways, it seems secure right now and I will take yall's word for it. Thanks again....

Hello your welcome. as long as the wheel is tight and straight do not worry about the little gap on the left side. there is a spacer that can be put there but it is not nessacary
