How to take apart this Aheadset?

I bought a used Trek 8500, probably from '96, with an Aheadset (Kontak SA or ST I think). I'd like to clean and repack the bearings on the headset, and have already loosened and removed the stem, spacers, and rubber seal from the headset stack. Now I'm down to an (aluminum?) split ring(?) inside a black metal top race(?) -- see photo for details. How do I remove the split ring/top race? Should I just gently bang on the top of the steerer tube to have the top of the head tube push up the top race and split ring? Should I try to pry the split ring up?

knock the fork out with a rubber mallet, or equivalent.

yes use a rubber mallet or block of wood and light hammer and tap the fork down a bit then lift it up and seperate the parts and take them off
