Campy Cranks?
I am beginning to get serious about assembling parts for a build. I have always wished for a complete campy bike. I have noticed on Ebay the newer carbon cranks are all the rage, and a high price too. I have noticed a regular 2005 Chorus crank is going for far less than the carbon models. Is there any difference between these two models other than some material differences? Both cranks will work with 9,10,11 speed drive trains?

A 2005 crank requires a 102mm Campy square taper BB. That's why they are cheap. Campy switched to the outboard bearing UT crank in 2007. The UT crank is entirely different.
Officially, the 2005 crank is a 10 speed model, but the only significant change from 9 speed is the big ring moved .4mm closer to the little ring. That was done back in 2000. It would work OK with 9 speed. Officially, only the 2009 11 speed cranks work perfectly with 11 speed. The big ring was moved another .6mm closer to the little ring and the teeth are about .15mm thinner. In practice, I've had no problem using a Campy 10 crank with 11 speed.
Personally, I would not invest in outdated Campy. Try to find a bargain on a newer UT crank.
The Athena UT aluminum crank is about $166 at Ribble, plus another $20 for BB cups.

RAther than buy mismatched pieces, you may find that an entire groupo is a better deal. The new Athena 11 is only about $700.

I guess it depends on your budget. If you are looking to spend a lot of money you could go with the newer stuff. I have a 2005 Chorus crank that I put on an old Zeus square taper bottom bracket and it works great, but that bike has a little of everything on it.
