Questions about BB.
I have a 1982 Jubile Sport that I just bought a few months ago from a friend. My friend had bought it new and than only rode it a few times before he decided it was too much bike for him. He put the bike in storage and bought an upright style bike and there it sat for many years.
The bike was immaculate when I received it. Not that it's in bad shape now, originally there was just one tiny ding in the paint on the fork, I've added a couple of small dings this summer, and I've actually caused some wear to the brake pads and tires.
So I assume the bike is all original. And as far as I'm aware, that would mean a ball and cup bottom bracket. Also, the BB skewer is a square taper. Recently, I've developed this tick, tick, tick sound when I pedal. The sound only happens when the right crank is top dead center.
I can't narrow it down to definitively the BB, because it only happens when I'm riding the bike. If I get off to try and diagnose the cause, it stops happening. It also does not happen if I peddle backwards.
I'm thinking the noise is the bearings in the BB and they need to be repacked, but why would it not make that noise if I not on the bike? And why would it only happen at TDC on one crank?
Do they still even make BB with square taper skewers any longer?
******
My other suspicion is the noise is coming from the pedal, since I've checked everything that's visible and nothing seems to be touching as the crank rotates. The peddles are Christophe Specials with toe clips and straps. So it could also be the bearings in the peddle. That's easy enough to check, I'll could try peddling with one foot and keep me right foot off the peddle, or just swap the pedals with a set off of another bike.

It's 'pedaling', unless you're selling wares on the street.

The tick-sound may be due to a bolt in need of tightening - or a chain being to long, or a myriad other causes. Try this:

Panthers007 and operator, I should have known Sheldon Brown would have some guidance. Thanks.
I don't think so, but it's something I'll double check. Thanks.
Doh, I knew that did look right.
