I have an Ultegra 9-speed set up with a compact double crank. The bike rides and shifts flawlessly except for one annoying issue, which I need some insight about.
The left shifter has 4 positions and I have them set up in order as follows - #1 small chainring, #2 small chainring trim, #3 large chainring, #4 large chainring trim.
When moving through these positions in the order described, the shifter and derailleur work perfectly. However, when I'm in position #4 or #3 and try to index down one position, the shifter always "dumps" me all the way back to position #1.
I'm stumped...adjusting cable tension doesn't seem to solve anything, the shifter has been lubed and works fine for all other functions, the cable seems to be running smooth and not hanging up.
This issue exists when riding and also on a bike stand.
Can anyone suggest to me what might be happening? Thanks

I have 9-speed DA, and this is how it has always shifted. This is by design according to the service instructions. I imagine Ultegra is the same.

Sorry, I read a little too quickly.

If the shifter is in the #3 position (large chainring, no trim), then the small lever will dump it all the way back to #1 (by design). However, if it is in #4, then it should go back to #3. If it's not, then maybe some stop is worn away inside your shifter. Or, maybe the H screw is too tight and you're not able to access the #4 position to begin with.

Start by making sure you've redone this procedure before starting to look for problems. It'll save you headache. Make sure you do it thorougly.

The only reason for the extra positions is that the 9-speed Ultegra shifters are double/triple compatible. On a double you should be able to shift from one ring to the other with one sweep of either lever.
D-A 9-speed double shifters have two main positions and a soft trim for the inner ring.
It sounds as if you may have too much cable tension.
