Flip flop hub with no lockring?

Hey all,

I recently picked up a wheel out of a dumpster...it had some rust on the freewheel/hub(steel) and a broken spoke (I would guess this is what landed it in the dumpster). To my eye it appeared to b a flip flop hub with a single speed freewheel threaded onto the wrong side. I figured someone threaded the freewheel on over the smaller lockring threads rather than on the freewheel side but when I finally got ahold of a BMX style freewheel tool, I discovered that this hub simply has freewheel threads on both sides

Whats up with that? I want to make a ghetto fixie wheel to swap in occasionally (its a 700C) but what are my options without lockring threads?

Where can I get something cheap that would have spacers, cog, and a lockring that fits freewheel sized right threads. The wheel itself is pretty junky so I was planning on just putting some JB weld on the cog and tightening hard and then repeating with more JB weld and a lock ring...does such a ring exist?

the hub in question is I believe a two sided BMX hub so you can have two different FWs on the same wheel.

I think a standard track cog fits the threads and, if I am not mistaken a british or englis lockring may hold it place. this is not fool proof but with the JB it will likely work ok

I'll give it a shot...I wonder where I can grab those parts cheap... (and I'd better not pick a bad ratio...no changing once the JB weld is in place)

You're describing the standard suicide setup. If you're going to do this, don't try any hipster fixie tricks and run two brakes.

I'd like to think that a bunch of JB Weld and multiple lockrings (also JB welded) should be pretty strong...

I am planning on destroying this hub...nothing else should ever be able to go on or off...maybe I can deform the outer edge so the lockrings cant even come off if they break the JB weld...too bad I don't have the ability to actually weld.

Considering that I hear about people *stripping* cogs and lockrings...I can't see how an irreversible and completely overboard ghetto setup can be any worse.

you need a bottom bracket lockring, you need to rota-fix your cog on, and you need to run a front brake. you skip any of these and you risk a horrible accident.

A rear brake is a good thing too, but it doesn't qualify for a need

now....assuming that I do have a front brake and possibly a rear (whatever bike I put this on will have both...the brakes might not reach in back though)...what happens if this all blows up?

I'd never run on the street without a front brake just in case, but if this thing blows up is it just an issue of suddenly not being able to stop without a brake or does the chain do something nasty

Yes it's a "need". The bb lockring does jack**** if it's not reverse threaded like on a real track hub.

Yes, the chain can very easily do "something nasty." If the cog starts to un-thread, the chain will come off, wrap around the hub, and lock the rear wheel up solidly. If, say, you were sprinting to turn in front of an oncoming semi approaching an intersection, you'd go down in the middle of the road and become road kill.
