bb noise
 

noise just started up after I put the bike up for sale. LOL
only makes it when I pedal hard and on one side only. Tightened the nut that holds the cranks down along with the chainrings. Problem still exists, but was wondering about the crank removal tool. Is this a universal tool that I can use on other bikes? Or will I need to have a few different ones like the sockets to remove different brand of cassettes? Anything else I will need. This is another older sugino crank btw.

Crank puller is pretty much universal. Bottom bracket tools aren't. If it is an old cup and cone BB, you can probably get by with little or no specialty tools.

what's next to take the bb apart. I tried loosening the one with the holes in it but it wouldn't move.

Remove your seat post, clean and re-grease, install and ride. See if your sound disappears. This is the first thing I do when I hear a sound who's location is less than obvious. It can save you a considerable amount of needless work and only takes a moment to try.

So thats an old style loose bearing BB and the side with the holes won't move because the thing with the notches is a lockring. Remove that, then remove cup with holes (leave fixed cup on other side where it is). Pull spindle and bearings out, clean everything, regrease bearings, reassemble. Be careful not to overtighten the adjustable cup (thing with holes) as that will prevent free movement of the bearings. It should tight enough so there is no play in spindle but everything should still turn freely. http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=93

Also be careful not to under-tighten it. There should be no perceptible lateral play when properly adjusted, yet spin freely. It likely will take you several tries till you get the hang of it.

Everyone always comes up with random ass guesses that do not help the OP in noise threads. The creaking link has a thorough almost algorithm for checking the bike top down and is complete. It's like we're reinventing the wheel on every noise thread FFS. Hardly anybody comes on here describing the noise in detail or what they've already done to isolate the noise.

Yep. That's why I rarely participate in noise threads. I don't need yet another opportunity to ask how the OP came to the conclusion that it is the xyz that is making the noise. Rather, I was adding to the "how to R&R the BB" part of the discussion. So..

OP, why do you think it's the BB? Have you heard the noise while not on the bike?

no I just assumed it was the bb because it I stand on the right pedal I hear it. I just want to service it as it doesn't feel too smooth.

Had an issue with one of my bikes when it was an old chain (and needed WD-40 to break rust free, etc). I agree it can be a challenge to isolate noise, and best not to assume it's one thing or another. Do the work to isolate what you can, and take the easy steps first.

you mention that you hear the sound when you stand on the right pedal - maybe it's the pedal?
