I need help on a Vintage Schwinn coaster hub.

Come on all you vintage/antique middle weight guy's.

I'm having issues with a 1979 Schwinn Tornado rear coaster brake hub.?
The hub is believed to be original to the bike. The coaster arm is stamped Schwinn approved and the hub body is stamped Germany. The hub has an oil port in the middle of the hub. An oil port, not a grease cert just to be clear. This is the older style internals with the screw type instead of the two ball bearings. This is my first hub to tear down, so my info on type is from the local bike shop.
(Sincerer thanks to all the guys at The Bicycle Path here in Denton)

The problem was that the coaster brake worked, but would not stop the bike very well. The local bike shop recommended I disassemble the hub, clean out the old grease, and reassemble it with PARK bike lube. I'm mechanically inclined so off I went. Now the coaster brake works great, but the hub is noisy only when peddling. Just coasting is quiet and braking is quiet. I dismantled the hub a few times and tried adjusting the tension on the internals. I've gone from so tight nothing works, to so loose the axle has up and down movement. With no change in the noise. I haven't been able to find an exploded view of the hub or tech info for adjusting/trouble shooting. All help is appreciated. I'm sure the LBS can fix it in no time, but I'd like to learn for next time.

You might want to try a heavier grease like marine grease ,which can be thin out with oil if needed.(the reason for the port ).

Are you sure the noise is in the hub and not caused by the chain and/or cog? Any chance the chain line was changed or the wheel isn't aligned quite correctly when it was installed?

Yes I'm sure. I can hold the wheel in my hand off the bike, and it only makes the noise when I spin it using the cog.

Did you grease the brake pads? You wouldn't think you would, but it's needed.

OK, I just assumed the hub used oil instead of grease, due to the oil port. That's the main reason I went with PARK LUBE. I figured it was thicker(so better?) than just oil. I'll give it a go with some bearing grease. Thanks, Matt

Actually I did. I wasn't sure, but they were coated when I disassemble the hub. So I lubed them going back in.

Re-check the right side bearing. It does not move when the wheel is coasting, only when being driven by the chain.

Look closely at the hub & brake arm. It may be a Sachs KOMET hub. If that is the case, ignore other posts. Here is a link for you.
