Looking to buy a hub. Suggestions?

I wanted to get some input on rear track hubs. Reason being: I'm going to try and build a wheel for the first time (specifically a rear wheel). I just wanted to know what hubs other people have/would-like-to-have used and based on experience (or word of mouth, encounters, witnesses, etc.) whether or not they would recommend that for a first build. Or if you have anything in mind that you feel is appropriate for my situation. Please take into account cost vs. quality. I've considered Phil Wood for a while based purely on other people's builds and the little research that I have done.
Thanks for the input!

No, don't buy Phil Woods hubs. They are way too cheap.
Spend your next year looking for a NOS Campagnolo NJS C Record Pista hub. This is what you want, no less than that.

Now, on a more serious note, you can be perfectly happy with pretty much any hub, even a Quando one (I have one, 2000+ miles on that without any problems).
However if you are comfortably able to afford a PW, please go ahead. It's always good to have nice stuff.

Cheers

I almost didn't catch that, I was like:"Is this guy joking or..??". How about these mack hubs floating around? I got this suggestion from someone at the SS/FG forums, should I look into this?

Origin 8

Approx. $48.00 at LBS?

Generic with Taiwan cartridge bearings - in a dualie fixie flavor and a fixie + freewheel flavor. In all colors - however white will be powder coat.

r = 62mm
c = 34mm front / 31.5 rear

Non-Branded Generic

Approx. $48.00 at LBS

Will look just like the Origin 8 model - same bearings, cones and locknuts etc. Also the same dimensions and options. Often found on factory built Weinman DP-18 and Velocity DeepV wheelsets.

r = 62mm
c = 34mm front / 31.5mm rear

Sansin Look-Alike

Approx. $40.00 at LBS?

Possibly made my JoyTech. Has axle, cones locknuts that look to be of material normally found in Joytech hubs. The cones have a built in but small o-ring seal. When adjusted with just a slight drag only - these hubs are great! I like then better than the sealed cartridge stuff above. They look alot like a Sansin product I saw back in the 80s.

r = 62mm
c = 34mm front / 31.5 rear

I'm suggesting the above since this is your first wheel build. Save the really expensive stuff for when you've gotten the hang of it. Consider Phil later - with purple seeming to be a popular color for Phil Wood track hubs.

=8-)

I like surly hubs, good cartridge bearings, nice polish, standard axle, and pretty looking high flange.
