bikes with hub-gear systems

Does anybody know anything about bikes with hub-gear systems? I know they were used in america prior to the 70's and are still used in Europe. If possible I would like to turn an old road bike i have into a bike with hub gears. Any random knowledge/suggestions will be helpful.
