Should I replace this tire?
I'm concerned about a hole in my tire (see picture of my rear tire) and wondering if I should replace it. It is an Specialized Armadillo All-Condition that has about 2500-3000 miles on it (mostly commuting on bad roads with lots of glass and other crap). To the tire's credit, the huge piece of glass that caused this did not flat the tire. It sort of wedged itself between the rubber and the fabric, pealing the two apart a bit, and it did cut a small hole in the fabric (I stuck an old piece of tube as a boot on the backside for a little bit of protection). I've been riding on it for a while now without problems. However, it seems to be slowly getting bigger/opening up (its about 1 cm long now) ... that area in the middle is the fabric showing through. I'm wondering if I'm just biding my time until something pokes itself through that hole and wrecks the tire altogether, leaving me stranded.

If the hole is propogating, it will only get worse - time to buy new.
And, I think I see a bulge, indicating hidden damage.

If you can find some gasket material that is used in pipe flanges you can cut a piece and super glue a permanent boot in the tire.
The gasket should have fiber reinforcement in the center to be of any use. It is made in 1/32" thicknesses that is ideal for a boot.

Of all things to worry about, having a decent tire shouldn't be one of them. Just buy a new one. You've gotten plenty of miles out of that one.

and now that I've blown that picture up, don't even ride that one again. You're asking for trouble.

for what it's worth, I had a similar tear/bulge a few months back on my rear GP4000S. I booted the tire from the inside and used shoe-goo on the exterior to fill in the gap. I have ridden on the tire for 6 months now -- about 10 miles daily. No problems encountered. I expect to replace my tires anyways this fall, so I am not too worried.

That tire is done. Replace it. The rubber on the tread area is very thin and cords can be seen in more than one location. A flat is just around the corner.

I wouldn't ride it further from home than I'd be willing to walk.
Nor down any fast hills.
