Gears slipping???

Gears slipping???
Hi Guys,
Ive just bought a used 1999 Diamondback Interval and used it (tried to!!) yesterday for the first time. The trouble is is that whilst when i change gear it shifts into the new gear, when i freewheel or stop at a junction, when I go to pedal again, I have to pedal three or four times round before the gear kicks in. Why is this doing this? I nearly came off within 200 yds when i stopped at a junction, went to pedal away and nothing,...just spinning on its cog for a few revolutions before the bike got going.
Can anyone help please????

It sounds like either you're shifting while stopped with a derailleur or your freewheel/freehub pawls are not working correctly.

Thanks for the reply. I wasnt changing gear when I was stationary. I literally stopped pedalling 10 yards or so before the junction. Then when I went to pull away from the junction the pedals spun...I didnt go anywhere so had to put my right foot back down to balance (looked ridiculous!!) then the gear kicked in. Ive never come across this problem. If it is the freewheel pawls is this relatively easy/cheap to fix?

If its a freehub, it might be gunked up grease in the freehub, which you could remove and flush out with light oil.
For a freewheel, you just need a new freewheel.

Ten-year-old bike; original chain and cogs, maybe? A lot of casual riders leave the chain on the smallest cogs in back and do all their shifting in front, which means that the smallest cogs wear out pretty fast. If this is your situation, the best remedy is to replace both the chain and the cassette or freewheel.
