10 speed Campy + 9 speed Shimano

Works surprisingly well! Seriously. A customer's bike today featured 10 speed Campagnolo shift levers and Shimano derailluer with a nine speed, Shimano cassette and it shifted darn near perfect. Took a bit of an overshift to land accurately in the two or three lowest gears (nothing your hand couldn't be trained in with one ride) and up-shifting was crisp as a properly matched system. Anyone else noticed this?

Just a heads up, I guess, to folks with very well stocked spare parts bins.

For this setup to work best, a different routing of the cable at the RD is needed, since the Campy 10 shifter pulls too much cable for a Shimano 9 RD. Lengthening the lever arm with the revised routing helps to reduce the overtravel that would be created by too much cable pull.

When I set up our tandem I used this (the hubbub link) to put Ergo 10s on the otherwise stock 9s Shimano-ish drivetrain (Truvativ cranks). Works well, even with all the extra cable and housing on the tandem.

I have the same arrangement (10-speed Ergos with a 9-speed Shimano cassette and rear derailleur) but used a Jtek Shiftmate to match them. It shifts perfectly with no compromises anywhere along the cassette.

Unfortunately, Jtek is, at least temporarily, out of business so my advocacy of their product is going to have to stop for the time being.
