Splicing Wires for Shimano Flight Deck

Have any of you extended the wires between the computer mount and the shift / brake levers?

My computer is working well, but to add a handlebar bag I need to move it just a bit further than the wires will allow and, accordingly, I'd like to simply spice in a few inches of cable. However, it isn't clear to me how the computer communicates with the shift lever to determine gearing... are there multiple wires within each cable? (I'm hoping it's just one!)

If memory serves me, the cable has four conductors. It needs to encode 9 or 10 positions.

That's what I was afraid of, but it make sense. I think I'll hold off to see if I can find an alternative solution. Thanks for responding so quickly! (I was about to cut it just out of curiosity -- now I'm glad I didn't.)
