New cable on grip shift won't stay put. Need help.

I've got two old grip shift sets; one 7 and one 8 speed. I'm having the same problem on both of them. When I install the new cable I can shift from high to low, but when I shift back the other way, the shifter pushes apart and the cable pops out a bit.

What am I doing wrong? Any help and sarcastic comments welcome.

Did you start with the shifter in the full release position (7 or 8th sprocket)?

Directions if needed

I've done it both ways with both shifters. Thanks for the link.
