shimano 600's sproket compatabilty
Dear fine people,
I've got a shimano 600 rear der with 7 gears, how big can my biggest sprocket be?
And the front der is also a 600, how small can it go if the big chainring is a 53?
Thank you.

My wet weather bike has old 600 friction gears & the largest sprocket is a 28 but i recon it may take a 30 at a squeeze,on the front I would think a 39 would be as low as you could go with 130 c.to.c chainrings, if its an old biopace I think they only go as low as a 42 for 130 c.to.c but you could swap it out with a conventunal 39 round chainring though. It could also depend on wether the rear der. is long or a short cage ??

Greywolf is right. The 600 rear der. it rated up to 28T but you can probably get it to run on a 30T cog.
The limiting factor for the little chainring is not the front der. but the crank size. If it is 130mm BCD (which it probably is) you can go as small at 38T. The max difference for the front der. probably 15T (38x53 would be at the max difference) but you can often stretch this by 1 or 2.
