installing brifters, 105's, cable routing ??

I am, right now, installing an older set of Shimano 7 speed brifters on my '93ish Paramount. Converting from downtube shifters. I am wondering how to route the shifter cables. They come out of the shifter on the upper inside of the unit and it looks as if they will be exposed all the way to the downtube cable stops...is it possible to wrap some of the cables in the bar wrap without binding?

Anyone have so pics of routing?

Thanks!!

Mike

Sorry, don't have any pics, but I can tell you for sure that the housings should be exposed from the shifter to the downtube stops(i.e. not under the bar tape).

Not too great. But it shows the routing.

Unless you bought the 7900 style levers which has under bar tape routing the above depicted way is the only way you can route them

Thanks Guys, it was sort of a dumb question but I am new to this. They are installed and work ok but I need a road test to be sure.

One thing is I just learned a lot about shifting and shifters. My LBS mechanic was fairly certain I wouldn't be able to do this so it is a small triumph of sorts. I got everything to shift but it took maxing out all of the adjusters so I redid the cable tension with the adjusters just short of mid point so now I have adjustment in both directions.

A question: does having the bike under load (vs shifting on a work stand) change the shifting characteristics?? I notice the FD won't quite pull onto the big ring unless I bear down on the crank a bit.

Whenever you do adjustments on the stand it MUST be road tested. This is standard procedure. Shifting under real peadlling load is different than on the stand. The reason why you need to redo the cable tension is because you didn't prestress the cables so all the ferrules/housing seated all the way in.

After prestress and final adjustment it should stay correct for quite a while.

From your description is sounds like you are running the cable without any housing from your shifter down to the cable stops... I hope this is not what you are doing. Good luck!

It wouldn't work period if this was the case.

I don't think that's what he did and the posting saying the brifters are working says he did it correctly. I took it that he was wondering if the housing should be run under the bar tape ala Campy.

I am running housings, no doubt about that (imagine if I wasn't ) As Operator pointed out I need to road test this rig. It seems to shift a little better the more I run it through the gears which is a function of stretching and seating of cables I suppose.

I am pleased as punch to have had the opportunity to do this operation. I feel much more confident of my abilities as a rider when I am able to understand , repair and correct problems that may arise on the road.

Let's all get greasy!!

I just got back from the first 5 miler with this rig (pouring rain, of course) and it seems to be doing real well right off the bat except for when shifiting , big cog to little cog, it hangs up and needs to be dropped to the next smaller cog and then shifted back up to catch the cog I want. This only happens on the two middle cogs.

The cassette and the chain are new, as are the cables and housings.

any thoughts appreciated

Mike
