Do 175mm Sturmey-Archer Hubs Exist Or Is It False Advertising?

I need to know! I have spent hundreds of dollars and much time in the search of the elusive Sturmey-Archer 175mm axle length AWC or SRC3 (3 speed coaster brake hub).

Sturmey-Archer's catalog shows 175mm as being available, and even standard for the SRC3. The dealer catalogs show 175mm as being available. I look online and most of the ones for sale (especially true for the SRC3) state they have 175mm axle lengths. But, when I order them--even if it says 175mm on the box--what is inside is always a 163mm version.

Then the seller contacts the distributor and the distributor says they cannot get the 175mm version. So I am really wondering if a 175mm axle Sturmey-Archer 3 speed coaster brake really exists.

Can anyone confirm? You have to measure the axle end to end with calipers or something that will give you an accurate reading. I think the 175mm version is supposed to come with spacers because it has the same 116mm over locknut dimension as the 175mm version.

Why I need the 175mm version is I have a modern frame spacing. The 163mm hubs are way too narrow for my frame (probably made for retrofitting vintage cruisers). I can add spacers, but there would not be enough threads on each side for the axle nuts (and it would interfere with the gear indicator chain).

As a last resort I may have to cold set the frame by compressing the stays, but since it has a new paint job I would hate to damage it. Thanks for any help.

Check or ask for the part #'s. The 175mm axle is HU2210 and the 162.7mm is HU2209. 175mm was supposed to be the standard/popular one.

Better to call before ordering and ask them to measure or special order locally.

Looks like they're coming "soon". The latest SA catalog has them listed along with the new 90mm drum brake versions. And the new wide range 5 speed and the new 3 speed fixed....SA is having new product intro issues, who know when we'll see any of this stuff?

Here's a link for the newest SA vaporware catalog:

Google. Seven seconds.

Don't mean to shock anyone, but selling hubs one at a time to enthusiasts is not Sturmey's principle business activity.

I bought hubs from that guy. They are not 175mm. None of the ones for sale online are 175mm either, even when it has the HU2210 part number and says it on the box! I have tried EXHAUSTIVE research.

I also have Sturmey-Archer's new 2009-2010 catalog and even ordered the NEW product (it came with the new style silver trigger shifter). It was a 175mm part number, but a 163mm hub inside, as always. I don't think the 175mm hubs exist at all! Prove me wrong.

I heard back from Sturmey-Archer. The 175mm hubs are only available in Taiwan as parts to go on new bikes. So I would have to buy a new bike with a hub already on it, but I think all bikes imported into the USA and Europe have Shimano Nexus hubs instead. I am just going to compress and cold set the frame to fit the 163mm rear hub. The end.

P.S. All the online ads you see for the 175mm hubs are wrong because only 163mm is available. If you order a 175mm AWC or SRC3 hub, I guarantee you that there will be a 163mm in the box. Every online retailer you can think of, I have either ordered a hub from them or asked them to measure the hubs, and none of them have or can get the 175mm hubs. And Sturmey-Archer saying that they are not sold outside of Asia and installed on only a few select bikes confirms this. The end part 2.

I live in the UK and apparently Europe does not get the 3 speed 175mm hubs and the SA head office in Hollan had no interest in helping me. I ended up buying the SRF3 hub from Harris Cyclery(the one attached to Sheldon Brown), on the 12th of May 2009. It is definitely a 175mm axle, having read your posts, I just went and measured it with calipers

Thanks for the info. I went ahead and compressed the frame to accept the 163mm axle hub. It worked.
