Are my disc brake pads wearing down?

How can I tell if my disc brakes are wearing down? Every once in a while I hear a humming sound when I brake and, i think, it's from the rear brake. I'd hate to take apart the whole thing down there since I'm not so mechanically inclined. Is there something I should look for with a flashlight?

BTW, these are mechanical disc brakes that came on this used schwinn bike I picked up on CL.

Should be as simple as looking down at the pads with a flashlight. With them set up correctly you should be able to see how much wear is left on the pad. If it is uneven or really close to the mounts it needs replacement, which in mechanical brakes is fairly easy. If the pads check out then try cleaning the discs with rubbing alcohol or disc brake cleaner.

Why? I'm sure his eyes are just as good as a shop employee's.

As mentioned in the previous post, simply look into the brake caliper and you should be able to see how much meat is left on the pads. If you're unsure, take a photo and we'll be able to tell.

Thanks. I'll check it out later tonight. If I'm unsure of my diagnosis, I'll post a pix.

Stopping power is still solid. Only the intermittent noise is bothersome.
