Is this for the bike you just bought with which you were having problems with the rear rack? If so, why are you looking to put money into the suspension already? What do you hope to gain?

KentMadness 10-16-09 02:20 PM

an improvement

I know but i invested in part, modification, labors to make an ideal bike but still there were problem but who help me " the store or the bike manufactured " well they were both at fault

but the store even thought they they " refuses " the service the bike in the very first day after i got there HQ involve is we will take care of the bike and to make me happy the DM - district manage who i meet on day took 60% off of what i paid which was about $75.00 going back to me and they when above and beyond

and what about the bike manufactured the very first e-mail i sent to them was on 7/21 they responded to me 8/3/09 but the problem was already take care of because the store fix it and to be honest the only communication i receive was in octorber where they told me were not gonna to do anything else for me claiming they help me

You still haven't explained why you want to change out the suspension on a brand new bike. And to be honest, from the looks of the bike (what I can see at least, pics of the whole bike would be useful), what you are thinking about doing is really not worth the money or effort. You'd be better off buying a better bike.

JoelS 10-16-09 04:39 PM

Buying good shocks is a bit pricey. Unless that's a fairly high dollar bike, you'd be better off getting the right one to start with.

KentMadness 10-16-09 07:00 PM

Yea that for the advice

I do understand so what can i do " any options ? " because the reason why i want to upgrade is this i want a bike that last me for few years 1 to 5 yrs maybe more or less and i already put the time and effort into it and so why not swap part out " aftermarket " to make the bike more sturdy and able to support me because i'm tall 6'1" and also about 260lbs and the bike is do it jobs with the fault thank to the " bike manufactures "

* shoddy seat - replace 2 times *
* front suspension is good but not good when you hit a bump or a pot hole lightly *
* rear suspension is not do it jobs at all for support *

and as i said the rest of the bike that the it fault is do it jobs

and today i was on my way to my local home depot to finish off my pvc light mount and i happen to run into the sport authority which is near by so i when inside and head to the bike section " for some research " and i saw 2 bike in the $400 to $600 with decent component and one which is made by k2 have a "rst capa front suspension" and is disc brake mounted not sure about v-brake mount but from my view is that the shock is preties decent but the only downfall is thread-less which i need is threaded so make there is another rst shcok that fit my need...............you know

Where did this bike come from? There are no cheap suspension options for big guys like you. Don't expect any bike from a big box to hold up for you.

You need a better bike. Preferably one without suspension as it doesn't sound like you plan on going off road. I highly doubt there are any aftermarket options for upgrading that rear shock arrangement. If there were, you would be shocked at the cost, given that you've had issue with spending $200 for a bike.

Find a real bike shop (as in a shop that specializes in only bikes) and look for a non-suspension hybrid style of bike, something along the lines of the Trek FX series (http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/bike_path/fx/71fx/). It's considerably more money than your current bike and will cost even more by the time you add a rack and fenders but at least it will work for you, which is more than can be said for your current bike.

BCRider 10-18-09 05:55 PM

Kent, that rear shock is not really a shock at all but just a spring to help take away some of the road roughness. There is nothing you can get to replace it that will fit since this bike uses a totally non standard suspension system that is maker specific.

The only part of the suspension you will be able to upgrade is the fork. Even then you'll need to check to see what size stem it is and then shop for one of that size and that has the same measurement from the lower bearing to the wheel axle. But again I don't see why you want to upgrade by buying the lest costly fork you can. By doing so you'll be getting the same performance and quality level you have already.

I also have to agree that if you want to get a bike that you will enjoy for a lot of years then buying a bike such as this was not the way to get it. Yes you would have paid more up front with a mid line model from a well known maker but for that extra money you'd be getting a bike that requires no modifications, a bike where the saddle doesn't fall apart twice in a short time and that is both lighter and more efficient to ride thanks to components that are better finished and smoother in operation. Such a bike would not wear out, other than the usual consumables, in 5 years or 15 years so the extra life you get from it would again easily justify the original greater cost. Again, I know it's not what you want to hear now that you've got this thing in your garage but it's the reality of what you're facing at this point.

If money is large concern you would even be better off looking up a couple good hardtails on your local craigslist or ebay or whatever your source. Sadly, big box bikes are designed to just trick you into buying them by putting flashy things on them. In reality almost all of the bike is cheaply designed in order to keepcosts down. Even some bikes ten years old from a profesional shop will be better. If you can not afford the bike at the shop grap up a used one that was once in a shop. You said you were looking at sports authority bikes at 500 to 600. If that's your bugget than check into hardtail mountain bikes, you will get way better at an actual dealer! If need help picking one out let me know! :D

Steev 10-19-09 07:13 AM

You won't get any suspension components for anywhere near that price that will actually be of any use.
This is a case of "you pay for what you get"

corkscrew 10-19-09 09:20 AM

A good entry level front shock will probably cost 3-4x times what your bike did.

bkaapcke 10-19-09 09:42 AM

A suspension seat post is about all you can get that's anywhere near $100.00. bk

bkaapcke 10-19-09 09:52 AM

corkscrew, I figured out why driving makes one angry. By being in a (fake) hurry you're always trying to push through the crowd. It doesn't work because, these days, there is too much crowd everywhere you go. After a while the endless frustration gets to you. Slow down and go with the flow. All of a sudden driving is a pleasure again. bk

Brought to you by the CHP, Santa Clara Superior Court and traffic school. From when I recently got popped for being in a fake hurry.

corkscrew 10-19-09 06:38 PM

I'm not in a hurry when I drive. Bicycling every where has that effect on a person.

Driving makes me angry because everyone else is in a big damned hurry, whilst talking on cell phones, doing their makeup, changing dvds etc. Perhaps I should change it to "Other people driving makes you angry". :)

roberth33tiger 10-19-09 07:01 PM

corkscrew, why join the crowd of angry people? if you change your attitude, then we'll all have
one less angry driver to put up with.

DMadro 10-19-09 09:46 PM

I have worked on this type of bike sold under the Kent brand name. The overall quality of the components is on the low side. Replacing any of the components will not change the performance. I recommend donating the bike to a charity and getting a new bike.
