Crank breakdown question...

I have an old SR crankset and I was wondering if it is possible to remove the outer chainring. The inner ring is held on by the normal crankbolts but the outer chainring looks pressed on. Is the outer ring removable? Can the spider be removed from the crankarm on this set? Just wanted to ask around and see first before I tried anything.

Thanks in advance.

The spider is swagged (pressed) on to the crank arm and is not removable. The large chainring is not designed to be removed but you could drill out the rivets or even cut the whole outer ring off like in the pic.

Thanks. I already cut mine off with a hacksaw and am now rounding out the ends with a grinder. I guess it will work for the time being till I get another crankset. Thanks again.

Nice job. I might have left a little more material around the holes, but I doubt it matters.

You will have to limit this to a single chainring mounted inboard since the arms are too thick and the outside contour is wrong for an outer ring.
