Wheel not centred after cold set??

Hi!

I've almost finished the total rebuild of my Miyata 100 touring bike.
My LBS cold-set the drop-outs from 126mm to 135mm so the new wheelset would fit (Mavic A719, XT hub). He told me this was easily done and that he had realigned the drop-outs.

After putting the rack (Tubus Logo) back on, I noticed that the wheel was not straight, in relation to the rack, when viewed from above or behind (see picture). There's about a 10mm discrepancy from rim to rack between left and right sides. It's more noticeable in real life than on the photo...

The wheel is dead centre with regards to the chainstay bridge (right term? where a fender nut would attach)...

Any ideas why this is so? Has the LBS botched the cold-set, bending only the left side or something? Most disconcerting!

On monday morning I'm in for a hip operation, six weeks on crutches, so I can't easily get back to the LBS for a while

Many thanks for any advice

EDIT: Problem solved with help from posts below! OP's inaptitude with little wrenchy thing was the problem!

It could easily be your rack that's bent. If the wheel is centered on the chainstay bridge, the cold setting was done properly.

The rack is new... but I'll check if there's anything "not straight" about it... thanks

You can also do the "string test" for basic alignment. Run a taut string from the head tube to the inside of the dropout on one side. Measure the distance from the string to the seattube. Repeat on the other side and they should be pretty darn close.

Sorry guys... must have been me that botched putting the rack on. Took it off, put it back on and now it looks ok phew!

Can I blame it on being a bit nervous about going under the knife?

Me! hip operation, not replacement just grinding and smoothing. Six weeks on crutches, another couple of weeks rehab then in the middle of january I'm off to California to ride slowly and gently around in the desert areas for two months. So hip operation =

From Scandinavia to California deserts sounds like a nice January adventure.

Also make sure the wheel is dished properly. Do you have vertical or horizontal dropouts? With horizontal ones, it's possible to centre an undished wheel between the chainstays, but not between the seat-stays.

Always read the entire thread and not just the first post to see if the problem has been solved.
