From the Downtube website, my new "Nova" is equipped with a " ... Prowheel 170mm with 3/32" 46T chainring". Could I change to a larger front chainring without too much trouble ? I live in Florida, and seem to only use gears 5,6, and 7. Very flat state. I'm not looking to fly, i'm a senior, but every now and then it would be nice to have one more click available. Thanks in advance for any info.
'''96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '12 Surly Pacer, All are 3x8,9 or 10. It is hilly around here!
I'm not familiar with that crank but if it has bolt-on chainrings with a standard (110 mm) bolt circle diameter you could fit a larger chainring and probably need a longer chain. However, if it's an Ashtabula crank with a swaged on chainring, there is nothing you can do to it.
BTW, what is the cassette/freewheel gearing? One with a smaller small cog might be an alternative.
I will have to look closer. I think it is flat plate with a chain guard attached. Thought it might be easier than the freewheel. It is not a high end bike, but I'm enjoying the h**l out of it. Attached is a photo from their website. Looks like the crank might have to come off ? maybe more than I want to deal with. Thanks for the info. I's been awhile since I thought about this stuff.
