Dura Ace 7900 Cassette Slipping

Hi,

I just installed a dura ace 10sp cassette on an easton ea90 slx wheel with a shimano free hub. When I start to pedal, there is a slight slip in the cassette. While I'm pedaling, everything's OK, but when I stop pedaling (coast) and start pedaling again, the slight slip occurs again. Any clues?

Thanks,
Angus

Sounds like the same problem I'm having on my FUJI MTB. In my case it's the freehub not grabbing when you start pedaling. The bike shop is having trouble removing the damaged freehub.

I would have imagined that with high end components such as Dura-Ace you wouldn't encounter such problems, guess not.

Yeah that's a real b****. Does this happen frequently ? Anything in particular that causes it ?

To the contrary. DA and other other high-end stuff pushes the engineering envelope to reduce weight. If anything, it tends to be higher maintenance and more fragile than other groups.

It is not the cassette's fault that the (not Dura Ace) freehub body it was installed on was bad....

The freehub just needs flushed out and relubed. That will likely make it all better...

Some Shimano freehubs have had problems, but generally they're quite reliable. Not very serviceable, but fairly reliable. How do you equate the EA90 SLX with Dura-Ace? (ps never mind, forgot the title of the thread).

Doubt it's even a Shimano freehub on that wheel anyways...maybe Shimano compatible like the copy says https://www.eastonbike.com/PRODUCTS/W..._ea90_slx.html

Thanks everyone for the input. I took the wheel into my LBS and the mechanic said that it's most likely one of the pawls not engaging properly. He is going to try relubing, be he's guessing that we will probably need to send it back to Easton.

The mechanic is correct. The freehub needs to be cleaned and relubed with either the Easton freehub lube, or the Phil Wood Tenacious oil (yes its a real oil).

The lubricant gums up in wheel sets that have been sitting in storage for a while. Specifically wheels that are in a warehouse.

I just went through this with a customer a few weeks ago. Lots of cleaning, re-lubing with the Easton freehub lube and problem solved.
