Advice please re replacing axle and repacking bearings on freewheel hub.
I am rebuilding a 1986 "Miami Vice" Ironman Expert and discovered the rear axle is broken. It is a 105 6-speed.
First, I need to find a replacement axle. How manufacturer / group specific are the axles?
Second, I have not replaced an axle and repacked a hub before. Is there a tutorial anywhere?
Many Thanks

You should be able to find a generic replacement axle with the right specifications (length is not so important as the diameter and thread pitch) - Wheels manufacturing still makes plenty of generic replacement axles, one will most likely fit. Any well stocked LBS would carry this item.

Yes, an LBS. Shimanos with 126 spacing which tours has, use the same axles. Longer can be used I suppose. The man at the LBS should know and have it. Not worth ordering on line. Campy uses different as do tandoms and old/cheap bikes.

When you adjust the cones on a quick release axle make sure there is a little play that goes away when the quick release is closed.

I made up some blocks that allow me to adjust the bearing cones with the QR skewer tensioned up so I don't need to guess while holding the axle in my bench vise.
But even if you're adjusting them without a vise to hold things steady Sheldon suggested that they should be adjusted with a QR skewer in place and seated with close to the same pressure as the regular retention skewer. Otherwise it's just guess work and that's never good.
