8 Speed Suntour SL

Can anyone shed some light on some suntour kit? Specifically whether a new SRAM 8 speed chain will work ok (seem to remember reading somewhere it will, but I'll be damned if I can find that reference now) and also whether I'll have any problems swapping out the cranks for some new 10speed compacts, preferably without a FD change...?

According to Sheldon's crib sheet, the only Suntour 8 speeds used 4.8mm/5.0mm spacing, which is the same as Shimano 8 speed so a SRAM 8 speed chain should work fine at the rear.
Not sure how an 8 speed chain would work with a crank intended for 10 speed chain width, they may have narrowed the chain-ring spacing a little. I'd personally give it a try. Worst case is you'd have to run 10 speed chain.

Would it be possible to put in some spacers to move the chainrings ever so slightly apart?

Yes, if it proves to be an issue you could space the rings.
