Ultegra 10 speed F. Derailleur on 8 Speed Drive

I've been upgrading my bike small bits at a time. Currently running Shimano 105 8 speed Drive train. Upgraded front and rear derailleur to new 10 speeds. The rear shifts like a dream but the front is super difficult to dial in. I guess now would be a good time to mention that its a double crank anyway i'm thinking that the 10 speed front derailleur cage is a little narrower to accommodate the narrower 10 speed chain. Is my 8 speed chain/crank to fat for this cage? I can get it dialed in but its such a fine line that I wonder if i'm either doing it wrong or just trying to make the impossible possible.

What are your thoughts?

oh and i'm using Shimano 105 8 speed STI shifters...can't just use friction

Thanks

I would consider buying some newer 9 or 10 speed Shifters/Crank but that also means replacing my chain and cassette and I'm hoping to spend that money on a LHT instead

I think you are correct in your thinking. by 'dialing in' you mean it shifts ok but requires a lot of effort to keep the chain from rubbing? (that is what I love about Campi Ergo easy trimming of the frnt der) you may have to revert back to your old FD until you get a newer crankset or atleast chainwheels

You can't get that dialed in. 10 speed derailleur is meant for a 10 speed chain, which is narrower than an 8.

Or use a 10 speed chain. It will likely work fine on your current crankset and cassette.

I have exactly the same setup as you do. Initially I used an eight speed chain and found that it requires a lot of trimming on the front and it does actually rub on the inside of the jockey wheel cage at the back too. It was workable but not ideal. I switched to using an HG-93 nine speed chain and now it's perfect. Shifts on the HG-90 cassette are smooth as silk, the front shifts great and the only settings that rub are the ones you really shouldn't be using (big-small/small-big).

I'm using Ultegra SL derailleurs and Shimano rate those for use with 9 or 10 speed systems so I figured a 9 speed chain would be the best compromise. It doesn't seem to bother the cranks/chainwheel what I use (and I'm using a 26 year old Suntour Superbe crankset).

Thanks for the info. the 9 speed chain sounds like a good idea. Cheaper than buying a new F. Derailleur. My old F.D. is out because i realized it was a triple *smack head*
