1972 puch freewheel
i have this old puch 10 speed currently with 700c rims and 5 speed regina freewheel and frame spacing at 121mm. i came across a set of dumpster supplied alloy wheels with 27" 100psi tires and a 6 speed shimano sis hg20 gear cluster. the wheels fit right on with just a brake pad adjustment, the spacing seems to be 124mm but it fits without any force to the frame. i think the shimano is a cassette not a freewheel.
both gear clusters have a 28 tooth bailout gear, i would like to get to a 32 or 34, i am 64 and just starting to ride again. i am considering rebuilding the shimano wheel with the 700c rim if i can get a bigger bailout gear. any other options to consider?

You could buy a new complete 700c freehub-equipped wheel for less than rebuilding that obsolete hub would cost. A 7-speed wheel will be spaced 126 mm and if the 6-speed Shimano hub you have fits, so will it. Then you have a choice of a wide range of cassettes.

I agree. most bike shops have inexpensive 'off the hook' wheels prebuilt and all they do is attach the cassette of your choice.

interesting, something like those alex wheels at amazom.com, but i would still have the added cost of the cassette. the hub i have now i know for sure fits without getting a 2x4 to spread the frame. a new wheel might be a full 126 and not fit. also are gears still available to change the big cog for the sis unit. the cost to lace the new rim on is just my labour and it's a long winter!
edit;that's not a new rim just using the old 700c one, both hubs are 36 hole but one is taller than the other but i have spokes hanging around.

AFAIK, 6-speed freehubs are completely obsolete and individual cogs would have to be lucked into. Try the C&V forum and see what they recommend but I expect you will not find what you are looking for. As I mentioned, if your 124 OLD hub fits, then a standard 126 will too.

sorry my bad, but the shimano unit seems to be a freewheel as it has multi splines for removal, the hub is a sovos taiwan 02 93. did shimano make an ultra unit that fit the 120mm spacing? i see a shimano freewheel at harris with a 34 cog but it is for 126mm spacing for $20 and they have a 5 speed 120mm with the 32 cog for $50.
